Moving to London was an exciting change, but at times it also felt overwhelming and a little unsettling. To find a sense of comfort and connection, I turned to colour and drawing. Using art to observe and interpret my new surroundings helped me make sense of the busy, unfamiliar environment. Although drawing directly from life initially felt uncomfortable and unnatural, I gradually came to appreciate how it forced me to slow down and truly notice the details I might have overlooked in a still image.
In my collages, I purposely overlapped my found pieces of paper to imitate the busy and crowded atmosphere found in the markets. Whereas for the more peaceful and quieter areas such as the fish stands and abandoned graffitied alleys, are used watercolour to give a sense of peace and imitate what it was like to see it for yourself.
This process led me to create a series of drawings inspired by Dalston Market and London Fields, two places full of character and energy. I was drawn to the vibrant displays of fruit in the markets, the diversity of haircare shops, and the fast-paced, buzzing atmosphere that defines these areas. Experimenting with a wide range of colours, materials, and locations encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and broaden my creative perspective. Through this exploration, I have developed a deeper understanding of how to use my techniques to express atmosphere and emotion, something I hope to continue building on in future projects.
